DOMAINE DE THULON, MORGON 2022, BEAUJOLAIS, FRANCE $18.99 (MIXED) It just wouldn’t be November at Highland Fine Wine without a wonderful Beaujolais in our monthly selection. This is due to the fact that in our humble opinion, there is not better wine for your family’s Turkey Day needs, and this Beaujolais has a serious pedigree. Founded in the 15th Century, it came under new management in 1987 when Annie and René Jambon took over after a 20 year stint as ‘métayers' (a work-to-own scheme). Their children Carine and Laurent are now running the show. Their Morgon Les Charmes has a clean and vibrant bouquet with perfumed dark cherries, redcurrant, and a touch of gravel and rose petal. The palate is nicely structured, brimming over with energy. If we had to pick a ‘best’ village in Beaujolais it would go to Morgon, so we feel very fortunate to be able to source this one for your family this holiday season!

TERROIR DE ZINIO, CRIANZA TEMPRANILLO 2018, RIOJA, SPAIN $15.99 Located in the heart of the Rioja Alta, a high-elevation valley protected by the elements by the encircling mountains, this creates the ideal conditions for the early-ripening Tempranillo to reach its perfect ripeness and its peak expression. This fine offering comes from a co-op of over 200 families, each one owning a small parcel of land that they farm with the utmost care and attention to detail. Crianza has always been the sweet spot of Riojas for us, aged just enough in oak to increase the complexity of the wine, without turning them into spice-bombs. An elegant nose with toasted cocoa and aromas of ripe blackberry, with hints of cinnamon and coffee In the mouth, velvety, with structure, sweet entry, long and balanced finish. It would be a perfect pairing with beef stew.

GORDO, MONASTRELL 2021, YECLA, SPAIN $18.99 (MIXED) "Gordo" is Patrick Mata's affectionate term for his father, José Mata, who used to make wine from the Monastrell (Mourvèdre) variety in the 1960s. Produced from dry farmed vineyards. Vines are tended in chalk soil at 713 m (2,339 ft) elevation. This type of soil and the elevation result in wines that exhibit greater freshness with lifted flavors. The wine boasts an opaque ruby/purple color along with notes of lead pencil shavings, blackberries, black raspberries and a hint of blueberries. The sensational fruit characteristics are pure, as well as vivid. This full-bodied, opulent, stunningly savory, expansively flavored wine can be drunk over the next 2-3 years.

FAMILLE LANÇON, ‘LA SOLITUDE’ 2022, CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE, FRANCE $18.99. The Wine Estate “Domaine de la Solitude” belongs to one of the oldest families of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, whose roots go back to the 15th century. The grapes used to make this wine are grown in the stony, limestone and clay terroirs typical of the southern Rhône Valley. It is a blend of three emblematic varietals: Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The de-stemmed grapes are vinified in concrete vats and then aged in concrete and stainless-steel vats for a year. The wine is a beautiful ruby-red color with an intense nose of red berries and spices. It is supple and generous on the palate with a very fine and elegant tannic structure.

SAN VINCENTE, CHIANTI RISERVA 2020, TUSCANY, ITALY $14.99 (MIXED) San Vincente Chianti Riserva is a refined wine that entices with its rich aromas of black cherry, bramble fruit, and hints of violet. On the palate, it reveals dark, ripe plum and berry fruit flavors, complemented by supple tannins and a nice long, rounded finish. This Chianti Riserva is a perfect match for salami and aged cheeses, and it pairs beautifully with grilled meats or game dishes.

CHÂTEAU PIERBONE, HAUT-MÉDOC 2016, BORDEAUX, FRANCE $18.99 You are correct in your observation that this beauty is from the sought-after 2016 vintage. Cab Sauv (67%), Merlot (27%), Cab Franc (4%), PV (2%) Pierbone is the lesser know second wine of Chateau Peyrabon, the overachieving Haut Medoc Cru Bourgeois known for its location in the middle of the literal border between Haut-Medoc and Pauillac (vines sit in both appellations!) Former proprietor Arnaud Roux claimed that Peyrabon deserves to be a classified growth just like all of the neighboring estates (think Pontet-Canet & Mouton). He lost but he shouldn't have!
