BECCARIS, CHIANTI 2022, TUSCANY, ITALY $14.99 (MIXED) Look, I’ll be honest: sometimes we buy wines based on labels, it’s true, and sometimes the actual wine behind the label is even more captivating than the label itself. This Chianti is one of those delightful situations where both the label and the juice are equally remarkable. A DOCG level chianti coming from the hills between Siena and Arezzo their vineyards sit between 900-1600 feet above sea level, with a typical mediterranean climate and a winemaking tradition that dates back to the Etruscans. This is a classic Chianti replete with red cherry and currant notes followed by dried oregano and great acidity that makes it a match for any and all foods, but especially Italian.
CHALMERS, ‘MOTHER BLOCK’ RED BLEND 2022, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA $17.99 Chalmers was born in the early 2000s as a nursery specializing in one thing: Italian varietals. A very ambitious project as the number of varieties in Italy is legion and many of them do not travel well (looking at you Nebbiolo); however, many of these varieties have done well enough for Chalmers to start making wine in their on right. Their red blend can only be described a novel blend mostly of Sagrantino, one of the biggest, and rarest grapes in the world. Once it has had a chance to open up, the wine itself is elegant and refined with savory herbs, dried red flowers, rich red and black plum notes and a peppery finish with fine tannins. This wine is a sipper that will keep you intrigued for hours to come.
PRIMITIVO QUILES, ‘CONO 4’ MONASTRELL 2022, ALICANTE, SPAIN $14.99 (MIXED) With roots stretching back to 1780, Primitive Quiles is one of the oldest family owned wineries in Spain. The wine itself is made of Monastrell (Mourvedre in France) and the Cono 4 is a fun reference to the ‘conofors’ (think dairy tanks but made of American oak) that the wine is aged in and that give it its trademark slightly oxidative character, giving it a more earthy and complex character, replete with the black fruit, black pepper and savory notes that makes Monastrell so desirable, pair with anything rich and meaty.
MARY TAYLOR, ‘FABIEN CASTAIN' MERLOT 2022, PÉRIGORD, FRANCE $12.99 Mary Taylor may not make any of the wine that bears her name, but that’s actually the genius of her whole business model. She acts as an intermediary between small, independent growers and the markets that are crying out for their product. She takes care of all the logistics and marketing for growers who otherwise would have no choice but to sell their grapes to larger entities, where it would become lost in a sea of anonymity. Thanks to her, we are able to offer this rustic little gem from Périgord, a relatively unknown region east of Bordeaux. Made of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, it has a rich, velvety texture full of red and black fruits and just the right hint of savory spice, think old bay. It would be perfect with a meaty beef stew or even as an ingredient in and paired with Boeuf Bourgignon. or anything Cajun, like dirty rice or gumbo!
BELASCO DE BAQUEDANO, ‘LLAMA’ OLD VINE MALBEC 2021, MENDOZA, ARGENTINA $14.99 (MIXED) While Malbec may seem passé, it certainly had its time in the spotlight, it is always exciting to discover that little gem that packs so much refined complexity and depth of flavor in an attractive and affordable package. Cue the Llama malbec, founded in the nineties by Juan Igancio, a spaniard who became infatuated with the Malbec variety, he purchased 222 acres of old vine Malbec that had previously been sold under contracts for jug wine. The age of the vines is key, they can make a wine of finesse and complexity that younger vines cannot hope to match. The nose shows great intensity, with fruity aromas of cherries, blackberries and plums against a background of toasty hints from aging in top-quality French oak. Warm, rounded and well-structured on the palate with a pleasant, persistent finish.
ARALDICA IL CASCINONE, ‘ALASIA’ BARBERA 2022, PIEDMONT, ITALY $14.99 Araldica is one of the premier producers of Barbera, the fun everyday drinking wine of the Piedmont region. Similar to Pinot Noir with more black fruit than red, barbera is one of our favorite wines and if you haven’t experienced it yet this is a great one to start with. Coming from the hills of Monferrato where their signature red clay imparts a savory streak, this wine is replete with blackberries, plum and black cherry followed by a savory spice that lingers long after the first sip. Pair with anything that has mushrooms in it, like a classic risotto
