ESPORÃO, ‘MONTE VELHO’ VINO BRANCO 2023, ALENTEJO, PORTUGAL $12.99 When it comes to Portugal, the wines of the Alentejo region probably have the least visibility in international markets due to it’s location in the rural south far from the bustling ports of Lisbon and Porto. Indeed, this region is more renowned for the production of corks than wine. However, there are many gems to be found in this wild region and one of them is this delightful, refreshing white blend from Herdade do Esporão. A blend of the indigenous varieties: Antão Vaz, Roupeiro, Arinto, and Gouveio. It is an aromatic, medium-bodied white with great acidity. The nose reveals zesty citrus notes of lemon and lime, combined with white peaches and floral hints of honeysuckle, alongside a mineral undertone. On the palate flavors of grapefruit, tropical fruits, and creamy stone fruit are followed on the finish with lingering notes of fresh citrus and minerality.
BABYLONSTOREN, ‘CANDIDE’ WHITE BLEND 2024, SIMONSBERG-PAARL, SOUTH AFRICA $16.99 (MIXED) We are crazy about the wines coming out of the Babylonstoren estate in South Africa. Named after a nearby hill that resembled the biblical tower of babel, the beauty of this estate more closely resembles the garden of Eden. A gorgeous renovated old Dutch plantation, in addition to its vineyards and winery, it has a full functioning farm, botanical gardens, and even one of the top restaurants in the country Babel. The wine itself is a blend of the white varieties, mostly Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay, it shows fresh tropical and citrus flavors of pineapple and lime with hints of melon, very complex but also refreshing, a long finish that lingers but never overpowers.
PHILIPPE VIALLET, SAVOIE BLANC 2021, SAVOIE, FRANCE $15.99 (MIXED) The wines of Savoie have a magical way of transporting you to the slopes of Alpine France. The wine owes its unmistakeable character to the blend of unique varietals found only in this region: Jacquère (majority), Chasselas, and Altesse. The nose is fresh and bright, with an Alpine freshness, crisp orchard fruit and Asian pear notes that follow through to the palate in the most pleasant way. There’s fantastic minerality and texture here, with a slight saltiness on the finish. This wine screams après-ski, however, you may just skip skiing altogether and curl up with another glass and a good book.
WEINGUT FÜRST, SAUVIGNON BLANC 2023, MOSEL, GERMANY $18.99 (MIXED) The Fürst family has grown grapes and other crops at their estate in the Sauer Valley since the 13th century, and Michael is the third generation to make wine under the family name. His Sauvignon Blanc comes from a single vineyard planted in chalk limestone in the Obermosel, the southernmost part of the Mosel river in Germany, directly bordering Luxembourg. Clear, elegant, cool climate Sauvignon with classic varietal signatures of grapefruit, passionfruit and fresh cut grass.
GAROFOLI, ‘MACRINA’ VERDICCHIO DEI CASTELLO DI JESI 2022, MARCHE, ITALY $17.99 Antonio Garofoli began producing wine in 1871 with the goal of quenching the thirst of parched pilgrims staying at his inn. Thirty years later his son Gioacchino expanded the side hustle into a full-fledged winery operation. They slowly expanded over the years, entering the international market in1950. Today it is managed by fourth and fifth generations: brothers Carlo and Gianfranco and their three children Gianluca, Caterina, and Beatrice. The name Macrina comes from Saint Macrina, whose likeness was in a votive shrine near the vineyard where people from the farms used to pray. Intense nose of meadow flowers and white stone fruits. On the palate balanced acidity, mineral, with fine citrus note, the finish is clean with a palette cleansing effect that make this one of the easiest wines to consume en masse.
SORTESELE, ‘SANTI’ PINOT GRIGIO 2023, ALTO ADIGE, ITALY $12.99 (MIXED) In Trentino dialect, ‘sortesele’ is the diminutive of ‘sorti,’ or “small parts of vineyard.” According to ancient custom, a ‘sortesele' referred to large parcels of vineyard for which the heirs of an agricultural property drew lots, nowadays it’s more of a reference to a particularly prime spot of vineyard, usually where the best, most ripe grapes can be found. Grown along the famed Adige river in northern Italy, the world’s premier region for Pinot Grigio. Aged in stainless steel to preserve freshness, it is a pale straw color with delicate green tints. The nose shows complex aromas of pears and wild flowers. On the palate, the wine has generous, soft but lively fruit with firm flavors, good acidity and a long finish. The wine has fine structure, captivating to the nose and very satisfying on the palate.
