GIUSEPPE & LUIGI, FRIULANO 2023, FRIULI, ITALY $15.99 Ettore Anselmi first planted vines in 1937 after he bought two small farms in Pocenia and Dolegna del Collio. These areas are unique and specialize in white wine production. Limestone and clay soils suit Pinot Grigio, Friulano, and Glera very well. The Bora winds from the northern Julian Alps keep the vineyard fresh and dry. Today the grandsons Giuseppe and Luigi continue the family estate. Local success of their wines has grown the estate to 80 hectares. The estate is run sustainably by dry farming and using only natural humus to replenish the soils. The Friulano comes from 20 to 40 year old vines and is fermented in stainless steel. Notes of crisp apples blend with melon and white flowers. Textured yet crisp, perfect with appetizers.
FRIÃ FRIÕ, VINHO VERDE 2023, MINHO, PORTUGAL $17.99 (MIXED) The Fria Frio journey began along the river from the city of Porto, over green rolling hills into lush, vineyard-covered landscapes humming with insects and birds. Wine is a part of daily life here; many families have small plots of land with grapes filling every available space, growing beside vegetables and fruit trees, hung on pergolas and even draped over telephone poles! This is a place of warmth where no one is a stranger, just someone you haven’t met yet. Close friends Jocelyn & Lisa set out to bottle this sense of community, integrity, pride and most of all, love. This Vinho Verde D.O.C. is light and fresh with notes of green apple, pear, citrus and floral blossom. Made from sustainably grown grapes handpicked at the perfect moment to be fresh, fruity, zippy and naturally lower in alcohol and calories. The light effervescence makes it especially refreshing.
CLARA SALA BY: MARY TAYLOR, GRILLO 2023, SICILY, ITALY $16.99 Two sisters, Clara and Annamaria Sala, own this organic farm in Mazara del Vallo (a city well known for its fishing, and famous for its shrimp). A bird sanctuary surrounds the winery of 115 hectares. This property was a split-off from the old Cantine Pellegrino and is now all women-owned (all too rare in Italy). This is 100% Grillo grown on a single hectare in the Gorghi Tondi and Preola Lake Nature Reserve in Western Sicily, slightly south of Marsala in the commune of Mazara del Vallo. 100% organic. We love the rich saline / citrus Mediterranean brightness of this wine – infinitely drinkable. Pair with all kinds of light healthy Mediterranean foods, especially seafood!
CONDE VALDEMAR, VIURA 2023, RIOJA, SPAIN $15.99 (MIXED) A story of wine that begins in 1889 with the first generation of this winemaking family, which was already making wines in Oyón at that time. More than 130 years of history that began in a small stone cellar in Oyón. Generation after generation followed in their footsteps until Jesús Martinez Bujanda (4th generation), together with his father, created Bodegas Valdemar in the 1980s. Pale yellow colour with greenish reflections, clean and bright. On the nose, it is intense and fresh, with notes of white fruit such as pear and subtle citrus touches. Delicate hints of aromatic herbs and white flowers emerge in the background. On the palate, it has a flavourful entry with a smooth, enveloping texture. Its long, fruity, and floral finish leaves a fresh and well-balanced sensation.
LE JADE, CHARDONNAY 2023, LANGUEDOC-ROUSILLON, FRANCE $14.99 This chardonnay comes from a 93-year old co-op in the south of France, Le Costieres de Pomerols, with vineyards situated on clay and limestone hills overlooking the Etang de Thau, a coastal lagoon situated between the port of Sète and Cap d'Agde. Le Jade Chardonnay offers a wonderful yellow color, a complex nose of white flowers, green apples, mild tobacco, and vanilla. Rich and full-bodied mouthfeel, concentrated with a fresh fragrant finish.
